Gucci Goes Fur-Free

It was announced on Wednesday that the Italian fashion house will be going fur free, beginning with creative director Alessandro Michele's S/S 2018 collection, which went down the runway in Milan just last month.

Gucci has announced that they would no longer use fox, mink, coyote, raccoon, dog, rabbit and so on. They've also said that they would auction its remaining fur stocks, with the proceeds going to the animal rights organisations Humane Society International and LAV.

Instead, Gucci will use faux-fur, wool and new fabric innovations that have come into popular use within the fashion industry. Gucci’s “Princetown” loafer, one of its best selling items over the recent months, no longer uses kangaroo fur so nothing would change in its production, a spokesman said.

Kitty Block, president of Humane Society International, welcomed the brand’s “compassionate” decision. “Gucci going fur-free is a huge game-changer,” she said. “For this Italian powerhouse to end the use of fur because of the cruelty involved will have a huge ripple effect throughout the world of fashion.”
